A Shell Mirror

Soooo,imagine you're on an island.

Any island.

Pick one.

I know where this event occured,but it could happen on any island.....

So,anyways,you're on this island,visiting dear friends,and it's decided,"Let's go to -----."(you fill in the blank), "-------is playing there,tonite."

You get there,and find out they are closing down,at closing time,for a long week-end to refurbish the place,which hasn't been been done since the 20's(1920's,that is),or whenever.

"Take whatever you want." the bartender says.

"The barstools,too?" you jokingly ask.

Come closing time,and after quite a few adult beverages I might add,people(including the night's performer,who happens to be an old high school friend,and the bouncer)are loading barstools into,and onto,a SUV.(a hybrid SUV!)

You wake up in the morning and find this.......

"What the He@# are we gonna do with those?!" you ask.

Refinish 'em!

but first,you have to get them home 120+ miles in the back of the Tacoma,to be greeted with,"What the Hell have you brought home this time?"

After being totally dismantled,bleached(those leg rungs were sooo nasty!Don't wanna tell ya what was on them.),removal of those nasty blue vinyl seats,and numerous coats of stripper,you end up with this....... After staining,you get to this point........ and the finished product! Well worth the effort of getting 'em home,etc. wouldn't you say? Never know what you're gonna find in a bar,do ya?

An Olive Jar..........

How about displaying your Olive shells in an olive jar?

I don't want to say how much that jar of real olives cost($$$$$),but when I saw it in the grocery store I knew it would be a perfect way to display Olive Shells! The display effect was well worth the money.

Hanging Patio Lantern

Let's make another hanging lantern for the garden,shall we?

For this project,we're gonna need very,very little.

-An old bottle

-One of those kits that turn a bottle into an oil lantern.I got mine many,many moons ago, at Michael's Crafts.I just never found a bottle I wanted to use,until today,when the crafting muse bit me! "Hey!I got an idea.You know what you could do with that bottle?"

-Wire cutter

-Needle nose pliers

-Heavy gauge wire,which I relocated from J's work area.What's he use it for anyways?

Cut a length of wire to fit around the neck of the bottle.Make sure it's long enough so you can twist two loops for the hanger.The piece I used was long enough that I could make decorative thingies on the ends.

Cut another length for the hanger.Just bend it in half,and thread it thru the two loops.

And.........

Voila'

Another lantern for the garden,patio,porch,lanai.

I wouldn't advise hanging this from a tree(I just did this for a photo-op),unless you want a forest fire.And firemen at your house.It's up to you.....

A Patio/Lanai/Porch Light.......

This is a project that costs ab-so-tute-ly nothing at all.And we all know how I like
cheap,
or nothing at all,cost wise!

All you are gonna need is this:

-A hammer
-A wire coat hanger(who doesn't have a bazillion of these cluttering up their closet?)
-A can-any size will do.A coffee can with a lid is best(we'll get to that later),but any kind will do.If you can find a can without ribs(do they even make cans without ribs,anymore?),all the better.
-A nail-a small size,like a finishing nail.Or you could use different sizes to get the effect you want.

-A template-I got mine from clip art,on the Internet,or you could trace around an objectA child's coloring book is a great place to find templates,by the way.
-Spray paint-anything will do.We all have leftover cans of spray paint,loitering around the garage.At least,around this house,we do......
-Water
-Wire cutter

First of all,clean the can.Fill it with water all the way to the top,and freeze.That should take about 24 hours.The time will depend on the size of the can.
Tape the template on the can.Go outside,and start hammering with the nail!If you have the lid,it's best you put it on for this part,as the ice is gonna start to crack.
Don't forget to put two holes,or more depending on the size of the can,for the coat hanger.Those are gonna be for your coat hanger thingy(Don't you just love the word-thingy?Kind of covers everything,doesn't it?)

Looks kind of crappy,here,doesn't it?

But wait!

There's more!

Get out the spray paint(for this I just used RUST-OLEUM Rusty Metal PRIMER.I just like that look,but you can use whatever.....

VOILA'

For this one,I just used 3 different size nails to get the effect of the palm tree.
Notes-----
It really doesn't matter if the cans get dented in the hammering process.You're gonna use them after dark,after all.No one's gonna see the dents.And the paint will hide most of the defects.

We use the citronella oil candle cartridge thingy's(there's that word,again)in the cans.

You can use use any size can for this project.Even pet food cans.Just vary the size of the candle you use.

They really look best,if they are in a grouping,hanging on your patio,or in your garden.Great way to get rid of garbage,isn't it?

If the can comes with a plastic lid,all the better.You can use it to keep the rain out!

How's that for cheap?

Seashell Lamp

Yep-you can use the same technique as the flower pots,on a lamp.

This started out as one of those clay colored ginger-jar lamps.You know the ones.The type everybody had back in the 70's and 80's.A new millenium,a new lamp!

You use the exact,same techinque,as the flower pots,except you don't have to use the concrete sealer on it.You need to make sure the shells are really tight together,or you're gonna get dust bunnies in there.And you don't want that.Yuck!
Spray it well with the polyurethane sealer at the end.That makes it easier to dust(if you are so inclined to dust.......which,I try to avoid,if I can.I'd rather make things than dust,but I digress).

Those Pesky Sea Urchins

For all of those that have e-mailed me and asked how do I clean those stinky,smelly critters,this post is for you........

The only tools you need are:a dental pick,a bucket of clean water,small,sharp scissors(like embroidery scissors),and the most important of all is patience.

First of all,I really try to clean them the day I find them. It can become an overwhelming job if you wait until you get home from vacation.By then,they stink to the high-Heavens,and you want absolutely nothing to do with them.And,so,they will sit in the garage until your neighbors are convinced you're hiding a dead body.And you definitely don't want the police at your door,asking to search your garage.Just to find old,smelly sea urchins.Ewwww....how embarrassing would that be?
I've also found they tend to break more easily the longer they sit.
So,let's get to it,shall we?As soon as I return from the beach,I put them to soak in clean,fresh water.I leave the animal inside until all the spines are off.I've found that seems to give it more support.Or, I just may be lucky........whatever it is,it works.Cradling(gently) the urchin in my palm,I just start rubbing the spines off with my thumb and forefinger.Occassionally,the urchin will go back into the fresh water,if for no other reason,than I can't take it anymore(break time!).The fresh water,also,seems to soften the animal,so it's easier to remove,later on.

You may have to pull a few of the stubborn spines off,but just say a little prayer,grit your teeth,and tug ever so gently. If you can do it under running water(remember it's your water bill...)it seems to go much faster,but in these times of water restrictions,probably not a good idea.

After all the spines are off,it's time for the really delicate part.Getting that dead,stinky,critter out.This is where you need to go s--l--o--w.....

First,I run the dental pick around to see how lose it is.If you're lucky(and remember it is better to be lucky than good!),the animal will be soft and pull right out,but if not and if it's still hard,I take the tiny scissors and try to cut him up,and then remove it in pieces.

Just take your time,and PATIENCE!!!!

After all the spines are off,and the animal is removed,I soak them in a 50-50(or even weaker) bleach water solution for about 10 minutes.No longer.Then rinse really well under running water,inside and out.

I try not to dry them in the sun,as that seems to fade them.I just lay them on a cookie sheet covered with newspapers,and let them air dry.If you have a rack of some sort(a baking rack?) and a small fan,even better.

After they are totally dried out,I coat them with a 50-50 white glue and water solution.Inside and out.You can use either a sponge brush or an old paintbrush.They're like sand dollars.The more coats of the glue solution you apply,the stronger they are.

So,there you have it.That's how I do it.If anyone has another way,I'd love to hear it.I'm all about easier......

And that's why I always say,"If I pick up another sea urchin,someone please shoot me!"

But I always pick 'em up..........

(Note-once,I didn't have any bleach with me,and I used a touch of Dawn dish soap.That seemed to work too.)

Seashell Planter

I have been asked numerous time,"How do you make those planters?"
Well,fellow crafters,I'm gonna tell ya.So,grab a big(this is gonna be a loooonnng post) glass of iced tea(preferably Sweet Tea-this is the South,ya know),and let's begin,shall we?

For this project you will need:
1. shells-I like to call them "tourist shells" or craft shells-they are by no means perfect(in fact,if they are broken or halved,all the better),and the more texture they have,the better.i.e.jewel box,arks,false Angel Wings,prickly cockles,broken mini-horse conchs.You will need some slipper shells(to transition between shells),and some smooth shells (just to provide a break in the texture).You will need a LOT of these type shells.The size of the flower pot will dictate what size shell you need.You don't want to use tiny shells on a big pot(it would take forever)and you don't want to use large shells on a small pot.You do still need to randomize the sizes tho.Just for appearance sake.
2. flower pot,and saucer-for this project,I used a 10 3/4" pot with a 6" saucer
3. concrete sealer -I used Thompson's Water Sealer for concrete.It does come in a spray can.
4. Kilz -the spray type,I've found nothing else works better(and you'll see why,as we go along)
5. spray metallic paint
6. glazing medium-buy the quart size at Home Depot or Lowe's-you're gonna use most of it for a pot this size
7. spray polyurethane
8. paint brush-the older the better(you're gonna ruin whatever you use-so just use an old,cheap one)
9.rags(preferably towels-they're gonna add more texture)
10. Glue gun (yesss!!!!!)
11. Glue sticks-you're going to use plenty,so buy the big package.
12.An old toothbrush-or any small,stiff bristled brush

Start by sealing the flower pot,inside and out,with the concrete sealer.This is going to protect any water from working its way thru to the shells.
After the sealer is dry,get out the trusty glue gun and have at it.......This is the hardest part,just figuring out what shell looks good where.Sort of like putting a jig-saw puzzle together.

Once you have the pot covered with the shells(and your burns from the glue gun have healed-I only got 3 blisters making this pot.I'm getting better!),it's time to head outside.

Spray the pot,inside and out,with the Kilz,making sure you have very good coverage.It may take 2 0r 3 coats to cover all the shells.You want to make sure the Kilz has covered everything.Even if you have chosen to not cover the entire pot with the shells.

At this point,take the toothbrush and break up any of the fibers left from the hot glue.I've found this is the easiest way to find them.Just run the brush over the fibers.

Now,it's getting good,crafters.This is the fun part.

Time to paint!For this project,I used metallic copper spray paint.

You will need to put the pot on something to raise it up(I used another spray paint can).Spray it from the top and the bottom(very important-this assures you good coverage-you don't want any of the shells showing through the paint).And the inside of the pot,also.It may take 2-3 coats to accomplish this.

Now,we're ready to glaze.I used black acrylic paint(mixed with just a touch of green) in the glazing medium.I've found it's best to lay the pot on it's side and work with the glaze,one side at a time.That way,you can be assured that the glaze will run down into any pockets between the shells.And it won't leave run marks on the shells,either.Make sure you work the glaze deep into the shells-this is why you use an the old paint brush.As the glaze is starting to set up(this takes only minutes,I assure you),start taking it off with the old towels.It may take 2 0r 3 coats of the glaze to achieve the effect you want.This project only took 2 coats.

Time to finish!!!!

I absolutely cannot stress this enough.Spray,spray,spray,spray,spray with the polyurethane!!!This is your final coat of protection.It will make or break your project.This pot got 4 coats of the polyurethane.4 coats on the inside.4 coats on the outside,standing right side up.4 coats with it upside down.

Voila!!!!The finished pot,all planted up................................along with some of the other color-ways I've done.

Some final thoughts....

-These pots aren't meant to be exposed to the elements.I keep our's on our covered front entryway.

-I don't plant a plant directly into the planter-I put the plant in a plastic pot,first,and then into the planter.

-They have gotten wet,and have done just fine.I do set them out in the rain,every once in a while,and let them get a good soaking.None of the shells have popped off.

-You can use the same technique to make picture frames,too.You just wouldn't have to go through quite so many steps with the sealing process.

-Use any color combination you like.The glaze should be the darkest color,tho.It makes the shells pop.

-You will notice,that on the other 2 pots,I randomized the shells more.You don't have to go all the way to the top,if you don't want to.

Sanibel Island Treasures...................

We just got back from 6 days on Sanibel Island,and I thought I'd share how I am going to display some of the shells I found.
This first is just an old white plate,with a candle I got on clearance(who doesn't love clearance items?).

In all reality,I got the idea from Sarah at ABeachCottage.Check out her blog,if you want to see some great ideas for displaying beach treasures.She's amazing!

The next one is of a tall jar that sits on our fireplace hearth.Of all the beach treasures I find.Not necessarily shells,mind you.Just the flotsam I find on the beach that appeals to me,and reminds me of where I have been.

All of the sea urchins I found,this trip(12,I think),have joined others in an antique wooden bowl that sits on the sideboard in our dining room.

Anf there you have it.........Just how we display our beach stuff.......

Framing Sea Life

I have been asked, "How do I frame sea life?" I shall tell you..................

These are the things you will need:
White glue
Sponge brush
Craft sand
Picture matting(the number of mats you will need will depend on the depth of whatever you are framing)
Heavy cardboard
Tray(or pie plate) Mark the inner most part of the heavy cardboard,which will tell you where you want to spread the glue.You don't want to go all the way to the outer edge.If you do,the mat won't stick to the cardboard.Using the sponge brush,Paint inside the lines with a heavy coat of the white glue.

Press the cardboard into the sand.You will need to really press the sand into the glue.

You may have to repeat this process,to get a good coating of sand.But be sure to let each layer dry thoroughly, first.Or else you will end up with gluey,sandy mess.I know-I did that the first time I tried this.

While the sand is still wet,lay the sand dollar on it(you may want to glue the back of the sand dollar first),and gently press it into the sand.I learned on that one,too.

Let it dry thoroughly.Then give it a coat or two of matte spray urethane.This will keep the sand from working it's way loose,after it is framed.Learned on that,too.Sand drifting down onto the matting doesn't look very good.

(This one doesn't look good,but,then it's just for demonstration purposes.)

This is a miniature whelk I did.I also put footprints in the sand,with the foot of a doll.

Some thoughts on this project:

You could use the sand from whatever beach you collected the shell,sea life,etc. on.I use craft sand,because it is finer.It just seems to work better.

The number of mats you will need will depend on the thickness of the sea life.

You can do this with a shell.If you do that,you will need to use a shadow-box frame,or a frame that has some depth. Or a ton of mattes!

My recommendation: stay with the shadow box frame.

A Sanibel Bench

I finally realized that I have never posted a picture of the bench that sits in our front entry.
Sooooo,here it is-------
These are close-ups of the paintings that are on the seat.The first is a painting of the sand dollars,Michael,the Elder,found when he joined me for a week on Sanibel,two years ago.I just placed them on the bench,traced around them,and painted away.

This is my salute to Gary and Tootie.Notice the orange scallops and pink tellon and coquina.

Sanibel Santa

I think this is may be one of the best things I have ever done.It 's what I think Santa would like if he took a shelling vacation to Sanibel Island,after the hectic days of the holiday season.
I originally made him when I was going thru a clay sculpting phase,and he was meant for Jon.He had held fishing gear,but now,he's holding a real jewel box shell with a pearl(it's fake) in it,and he has his golden shell bag,with mini "craft" shells.

Wreaths

This first wreath has "craft" shells and fake(meaning plastic) starfish on it.I used plastic because it hangs outside,on our back door.Instead of ribbon,I used real rope.And the netted bow is meant to be reminiscent of a fish net(which I intend to use someday).
I got the idea for this second wreath from Tootie's blog.....I just hot glued all my beach treasures,broken Sand Dollars,"craft" shells,and bent up Starfish to a grape vine wreath.We have a yard full of Spanish Moss,so I just grabbed some out of our trees(if you should ever do that,either spray it with bug spray,or moisten it and microwave it for about one minute-you don't want any critters in your house!)

Two New Creations

I took old menu's we had saved from Sanibel and Captiva,sprayed them with cold coffee(to antique them),decoupaged them to a tray we already had.Voila'. A new TV/serving tray!I probably should have posted this under The Great Wall blog,as it's a planter,but....here ya go.
We replaced the toilet in our upstairs bathroom.It just screamed at me it didn't want to go in the trash.I filled the bowl with dirt(yes,that is dirt!).
Voila'-----a planter! The top is still waiting for something to be put in it.........
Will they be put back together as a proper toilet? Haven't figured that one out,yet.

Why I Collect White Shells....

This is why I have been collecting plain,bleached white shells.Why I bartered coquinas for white shells with Gina.Why I pick up even common Ark shells.And,of course,those notorious buttercups ("why do you build me up...").

And I don't have near enough,yet.I just wanted to get started on this project.

It's an old mirror,bought in Newport,Rhode Island, in 1969.One of those tacky old nautical type mirrors,that were supposed to look a ship's wheel.I took those ugly spoke things off.Primed it,painted it white,and started hot gluing(one of my favorite things to do!).

I still need more mini's,tho,to go around the outer edge.It's going to be continuous work in progress,I think.

Eventually,it will go in the upstairs guest bathroom(which is in the great plan to be worked on,in the future).

A Bench For the Cantina.....

I painted an old bench we had,with a "sun" theme. I'm thinking I need to paint a sand dollar on it,too.

Notice the yard-art shells and the bowl full of worm shells........There are also some oyster clusters to the side.Don't know if you can see them,tho.

Here's An Interesting Idea.......

Candle holderActually,quite simple to make.

All you will need is:

a clay flower pot and the drip tray that matches it

a glue gun(w00t!!!)

terra cotta colored craft paint

some white craft paint mixed with glazing medium

And tourist shells.

All available at a craft store,except for the shells,which you will have to go to a beach for.

Turn the flower pot upside down.Hot glue the tray(right side up) to the bottom(which has now become the top) of the pot.Hot glue the shells on to the pot,in any arrangement you prefer.Paint everything with the terra cotta craft paint.Let dry,thoroughly.And glaze it with the white craft paint mixed with the glazing medium,so it looks like aged terra cotta.
Fill the drip tray with sand and plop a candle in it!

You could also surround the candle with more shells( buttercups look especially nice--"Why do you build me up......" )

Voila' !!!!

Here's A Neat Idea

Take an old,broken,outdoor water tap and put an old Christmas ornament in it.
Voila!It spins in the breeze and looks like water coming out of it.I think it would be neat to have a blue tinted glass ornament coming out of it,too.

What You Can do With Shells(as in sea)
